Frequently Asked Questions

How Does Botulism Toxin A Work?
  • Botulism blocks signals from the nerves to the muscles. The muscle that has been injected with Botulism can no longer contract, which causes the wrinkles to relax and soften.
  • Botulism is most often used on forehead lines, crow's feet (lines around the eye) and frown lines. It is important to realize that wrinkles caused by sun damage and gravity will not respond to Botulism.

How Is the Procedure Performed?
  • Botulism Toxin A injections take only a few minutes and no anesthesia is required. The Botulism is injected with a fine needle into specific muscles with only minor discomfort. It generally takes three to seven days to take full effect and it is best to avoid alcohol at least one week prior to treatment.
  • Aspirin and anti-inflammatory medications should be stopped two weeks before treatment as well in order to reduce bruising.

How Long Does a Botulism Injection Last?
  • The effects from Botulism can last up to six months - but usually last no longer than four months. As muscle action gradually returns, the lines and wrinkles begin to re-appear and wrinkles need to be re-treated. The lines and wrinkles often appear less severe with time because the muscles are being trained to relax.

What Are the Side Effects of Botulism injections?
  • Botulism injections rarely have any side effects. The most common side effect of Botulism is slight temporary bruising. Headaches can occur, but this is rare. A small percentage of patients may develop eyelid drooping. This usually resolves in three weeks. This development is usually caused by migration of the Botulism toxin and for this reason, you shouldn't rub the treated area for 12 hours after injection or lay down for three to four hours.
  • There have been no allergies associated with Botulism toxin A to date.

Who Should Not Receive Botulism toxin A Injections?
  • You should not receive Botulism toxin injections if you are pregnant, breastfeeding or have a neurological disease. Since Botulism  doesn't work for all wrinkles, a consultation with a doctor is recommended.

What are FACIAL FILLERS?
  • Facial fillers, also referred to as injectable fillers, can restore a more youthful appearance to the face by minimizing the appearance of lines, wrinkles and other skin depressions. When injected beneath the skin, facial fillers plump and smooth surface irregularities and sunken areas of the face. There are many different facial fillers including Restylane, Captique, Radiesse, Juvederm, Artefill, Zyplast and Cosmoderm.

What does a Consultation for Injectable Fillers or Botulism Entail?
  • During the consultation, the doctor will examine your facial skin, take a medical history, and discuss your goals. A course of treatment will be recommended and all aspects of the procedure will be explained including the technique, the risks, costs and so on.
